At the invitation of the Living Peace Projects, we were asked to speak on the importance of clean water for all people. It is a great honor to participate in this initiative, which seeks to promote ecological sustainability and universal access to safe drinking water.
Water is the source of life bestowed upon us by the Earth. The survival of all ecosystems and living beings depends upon its generative vitality. Yet, in today’s world, human greed and the pursuit of consumerist pleasures have led to the severe exploitation and waste of natural resources. In the name of agricultural expansion and animal husbandry, vast tracts of the Amazon rainforest—known as the “lungs of the Earth”—have been deforested, resulting in the destruction of countless species and the destabilization of global climate systems. This is further compounded by industrial mismanagement, with factories discharging toxic gases and wastewater, causing widespread environmental degradation.
Perhaps most destructive of all are the consequences of war: nuclear weapons testing, the development of biological weapons, and other militarized activities pose existential threats not only to humanity but also to the Earth’s ecosystems. These crises stem from a fundamental ignorance of the Earth’s delicate ecological balance. Our disruption of this organic whole has led to the pollution of vital water sources. In light of this, we must not only address water scarcity but also recognize the broader ecological crisis. Only by restoring the Earth’s organic cycles can we hope to ensure a sustainable and enduring supply of clean water.
To achieve this, we must nourish ecosystems with a love rooted in spiritual awareness. This calls for forming a genuine companionship with nature—one rooted in empathy, respect, and inclusiveness—as fellow members of a shared network of life. Through such companionship, we can foster reciprocal support and cultivate an organically regenerative cycle.
At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and the Parliament of the World’s Religions (PoWR) held last year, global religious leaders called upon all faiths to respond to the ecological crisis with the “waters of spirituality.” By integrating spiritual wisdom into ecological education and governance, we can rekindle a universal love rooted in spirit. Every individual possesses this spiritual love. The entire universe constitutes an entity of interdependence, nurtured by a shared spiritual source. Within this entity that is characterized by interdependent biodiversity, interconnectedness, and mutual support for thriving. This is the cycle of spiritual ecology.
We wholeheartedly support the Living Peace Projects’ “Water for All” campaign and are committed to joining hands in this noble cause—to cherish water, to protect our environment, and to nourish all beings with the spiritual love of water. Let us form spiritual companionship with all life forms, fostering deeper interconnection and a more beautiful, harmonious world. May the Earth be safe and may peace prevail on Earth.
