- Part of "The Spiritual Ecology" Series, authored by Master Hsin Tao
Spirituality equals ecology and vice versa. Ecology and spirituality are each other's spit image, and all forms of existence originate from spirituality.
All forms of existence arise and stem from spirituality. This inherent spirituality allows them to arise, blossom, and dedicate their beauty to the world all thanks to spirituality. It is their memory, which stores the information about their growth and development. This information determine what kind of flowers, grasses, trees, and other things will grow. These are all manifestations of spirituality, and cognitive awakening as well.
We must respect the ecology. The ecological environment has its own order and ethics, its own rules. We should not destroy it, but learn its laws. Understanding ecological ethics means knowing how to respect and be inclusive. We can coexist, allowing life to have space for each other, grow together, need each other, and become partners in life. We learn to respect, learn to be inclusive, give each other space, and embrace the coexistence of all. This presents the Love of mutual assistance and interdependence. Love refers to a world of sharing. Sharing is everything. This is called Avatamsaka. The Avatamsaka world of Buddhism is about sharing. The main purpose of spirituality is to share, and this is the Bodhicitta.
"Loving the Earth and loving peace" means to love ecology, spirituality, and life. From the marvelous mind of nirvana, we extend to the two loves: love for the Earth and love for peace, from "stillness" to "movement":
"Stillness" - Our awareness is clear and fresh in the contemplation of emptiness, like a cloudless sky.
"Movement" - From this stillness, we can generate a vibrant and lively life called Bodhicitta, which is also called love for the Earth and love for peace. This is the active area of our spirituality.
